About This Event:

Anna, Sheila and Clare Friel are earning high praises from legendary Irish traditional musicians. “We would wait eagerly for their smiling faces to come through the door and light up the room with joy, devilment and glorious music,” says Altan's Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh. An open Irish session at 6 pm kicks off this high-energy evening.

The sisters were born in Glasgow, Scotland, but their family roots are in the North West of Ireland, in the Donegal Gaeltacht (Gaelic-speaking region). As youngsters, they frequently traveled to Ireland for music workshops, and now they are tutors at many of those same events.

Being siblings, they achieve a close blend whether they're playing or singing. For this show, Anna (flute), Sheila (uilleann pipes) and Clare (fiddle) will be joined by Marty Barry on guitar and Cathal Ó Curráin on bouzouki.

Their 2017 recording Before the Sun includes album notes from three legends of Irish traditional music:

Clare, Sheila and Anna Friel give me great joy in the strength, beauty and variety of their approach to traditional Irish music. This is a joyous listen for me... [their] wonderfully delicate, strong, always controlled talents... enhance a wondrous tradition.” — Tommy Peoples

It’s been a thrill to watch them develop as singers and musicians and to marvel at their talent and enthusiasm for our shared heritage. We’ve been making music together all our lives and can feel their intuitive sympathy and understanding for each other’s music.” — Maighread & Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill

The girls have recorded three studio albums, and have performed across Europe, America and Asia. They've shared stages with acts such as Altan, The Chieftains, Lúnasa, Sharon Shannon, The Máirtín O’Connor Trio, Cherish the Ladies, Solas and Fidil.

In 2016, the girls performed at Festival Interceltique de Lorient, and won the prestigious Trophée Loïc Raison. In 2018, Clare was the recipient of TG4 Gradam Ceoil Ceoiltóir Óg / Young Musician of the Year. The award was presented to her by the great Mairéad Ní Mhaoniagh.
